The Neue Bachgesellschaft, which currently has around 3,000 members, has been working for over 100 years to cultivate and propagate the music of Johann Sebastian Bach as well as to scientifically research his life, work and lasting influence. The association’s main activities include
• Annual Bach Festivals in different places
Since 1901, Bach Festivals have taken place in yearly alternating cities featuring interpretations of Bach’s works on a high artistic level. The Neue Bachgesellschaft especially makes a point to ensure that the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach are always well represented.
The current publications of the Neue Bachgesellschaft comprise
o the Bach Annals as well as
o the newsletter for members of the NBG. It is issued twice a year and keeps all members up-to-date on the work of the association. It also includes latest reports and interesting facts about Johann Sebastian Bach, Bach museums and institutions. You’ll also find CD reviews, event recommendations and a look back at past Bach Festivals as well as an outlook on upcoming ones. Each issue opens with a literary piece on Johann Sebastian Bach.
• Bachhaus Eisenach
The Bachhaus Eisenach is an inalienable property of the Neue Bachgesellschaft. Since 1907, it has been used as a museum and memorial for Johann Sebastian Bach. Documents and items that bear a relation to the life and work of Bach are collected and put on display here. Maintaining the museum and expanding its collections are important causes of the Neue Bachgesellschaft.
• Bach Academies in Eastern Europe
Together with German instructors and local project partners, students in Eastern Europe work on selected works of Bach which they perform at a concluding event. This way, the compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach are popularized beyond borders and young musicians become familiar with the music of Bach in a very hands-on manner. The Neue Bachgesellschaft provides contents and financial support for these academies.
